BOTTOM LINE: Fans of "The Simpsons" may be disappointed that this film doesn't hit the highwater mark of the early shows of the TV series, but as a stand alone film, it's still very Satelltie TV and entertaining which gives people who have never watched the show an easy entry in to the Simpsons world.
THE GOOD: Being a long time Simpsons fan, seeing all the favourite characters on the big screen was very exciting, especially once the theme tune kicked in after the main title. The first 30 minutes is pure gold, harkening back to Season 3-8 where the TV series was at its most perfect. The remainder of the film does lose a bit of steam after that but is still very funny and filled with great character moments, including a touching scene where Marge tapes over their wedding video to make the point that Homer has screwed up so badly that he really has to do something to make it all right again, which of course he does, in the amusing, dumb, clumsy manner we've all come to know and love. Homer and Bart's dare competition is hilarious, and little Ralph has one of the best lines in the movie. The great thing about this film is that it captures the Simpsons perfectly (ie they haven't screwed with anything to give it the 'film' treatment). This is not surprising as most of the people who worked on it are Simpsons regulars and it definitely shows in the first half of the film.
THE BAD: Once the plot clicks in with the Environmental Protection Agency installing a dome over all of Springfield to protect the rest of the USA from Springfield's pollutants, the film does lose steam and starts to become reminiscent of the TV series after Season 11. One could make the argument that the film is a perfect snapshot of the TV series, covering all bases from Season 3 to whatever they're up to now. The Simpsons is at its funniest with its witty, satirical and intelligent sense of humour. Unfortunately, these get traded for slapstick and side gags the more the film goes on which is a shame because the film really does start off with a bang. It's not all bad, but for Simpsons fans, it will be a disappointment. Oh, and one other thing, even though he had one great line, why the hell wasn't Mr Burns the evil-doer in this film instead of being relegated to only one scene?
